Southbound morning commuters were joined Thursday by truck drivers who, normally, would have taken the truck route but who were rerouted after two huge trucks collided near the tunnel.
All southbound lanes of the truck route on Interstate 5 were shut down for 12 hours as workers struggled to clean up the mess left by two tangled big rigs.
The crash happened shortly after 2:40 a.m. Thursday on the southbound I-5, just north of the truck route tunnel, when a tractor-trailer hauling 40,000 pounds of produce collided with a big rig car- hauler, according to the California Highway Patrol.
No one was reported hurt in the crash.
The tractor-trailer ended up on its side, stopping all southbound traffic.
At 3 p.m., CHP reopened all southbound lanes of the I-5 truck route.
