The Castaic Union School District (CUSD) Governing Board will interview two candidates Tuesday evening to fill the remainder of former Board Member Victor Torres’ term.

Community members Bonnie Nikolai and Mayreen Burk applied to fill the position until November 2017, according to Charmin Ortega, CUSD executive assistant to the superintendent.

During the special meeting, current governing board members will interview candidates and discuss their qualifications before moving to place a resolution on the March 9 Board Agenda to make a provisional appointment.

Board members are expected to announce their choice to fill the vacancy at their March 9 meeting.

The chosen applicant will fill Torres’ position whose resignation was effective Feb. 17.

Torres was first elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2013, where he served as a member of the Santa Clarita School Boards Trustee Association and as Region 22 Director of California School Boards Association representing North Los Angeles County.

CUSD announced its search for applicants Feb. 3.  Any legally qualified citizen interested in serving on the board was welcome to turn in application packets by Feb. 17 at 4 p.m.

These application packets included questions about the applicant’s area of residency, participation in school or district activities, participation in community activities and translatable skills, talents and interests that would benefit the board.

It also included questions about the applicant’s interest in serving on the board and what he or she saw as areas of strength and areas of improvement within the district.
