A small weather system reached the Santa Clarita Valley Monday morning, dusting the area with precipitation and storm clouds.

“It’s just showery type weather,” National Weather Service (NWS) weather specialist Bonnie Bartling said.  “There are no big storms.”

As of 10 a.m. Monday, 0.04 inches of rain fell in Saugus and 0.09 inches fell in both Newhall and Del Valle.

NWS forecast that the weather would continue throughout Monday evening and into Tuesday.

Cooler temperatures accompanied the weather system, with highs around 60 and lows around 50 Monday, according to Bartling.

“On Tuesday, it looks like it will be slightly warmer with highs in the lower to mid-60s and lows in the lower to mid-40s,” she said.

Moderate temperatures will continue, with highs in the high-50s and lows in low-40s, throughout the week.  They will be accompanied by sunny skies until a slight chance of rain returns Saturday.

A Cold Weather Alert was issued Monday by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for the Los Angeles County Mountain areas from Tuesday to Friday, and for the Antelope Valley from Thursday to Friday.

“Children, the elderly and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during such cold snaps,” said Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, Los Angeles County Interim Health Officer in a press release.  “Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when they are outside.”

The department recommended that individuals in these areas defend against the cold by wearing layers of warm clothing, protecting their extremities, offering to help those with limited access to heat and not leaving pets outdoors overnight.

The light rainfall was a relief after a weekend of heavy storms that brought flooding, mud slides and debris flow to the area Friday and Saturday.

The storm brought a total of 2.90 inches of rain to Saugus, 3.98 inches to Newhall and 4 inches to Del Valle, according to the NWS.

It also brought down trees and power lines and caused numerous vehicle collisions along the Santa Clarita freeways and streets.
