“Do we really need another Beatles book?” asked Brooke Halpin when discussing the prospect with the publisher. He was not interested in rewriting that which has already been written many times over. So, he came up with a way to differentiate his book from the others — interspersing time-travel vignettes throughout the chapters. In addition to him writing about his Beatles experiences during the 60s, to make it more effective for the reader, Brooke puts “you” instead of him in the time capsules, taking the reader back to the days when the Beatles were top of the pops. He puts you in his shoes when he experienced the Beatles for the first time, when they released their record breaking songs, when they performed live and incited Beatlemania in America, and when their movies were premiered.
The book, entitled ‘Experiencing the Beatles – A Listener’s Companion’, was published by Rowman & Littlefield on October 15. Book signing will be on Saturday, October 28, from 3-5 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 3630 Valencia Blvd., in Valencia.
Halpin is a classically trained musician, award winning composer, published author, and painter. He had the great fortune of meeting John Lennon and Yoko Ono at John’s 31st birthday party, and on separate occasions, met Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. He produces and hosts the weekly syndicated radio show, Come Together with the Beatles which airs on www.radiomalibu.net and www.wrockradio.com.
A recipient of a MacDowell Arts Colony Fellowship, Brooke is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts and The Hartford Conservatory of Music.
