Story updates with cause of lockdown

A campus-wide lockdown at a local school has been lifted, according to Sheriff’s Station officials, as of 11:45 a.m.

McGrath Elementary School was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning, a receptionist at the school confirmed for The Signal. The school is located on the 21500 block of Deputy Jake Drive, near Valle Del Oro.

An alleged assault near the Newhall elementary school that reportedly involved a gun prompted the soft lockdown of the campus Tuesday, school officials said.

“Deputies are at McGrath Elementary school checking it out,” said Shirley Miller, Sheriff’s Station PIO. “This was a call (involving) a male Hispanic with a firearm near the school. Deputies are on the scene checking it out.”

The location of the school is about one block from where a deputy-involved shooting took place in November, and a fatal shooting in April last year, and another in January 2016 in the same neighborhood.

More information is expected to be disclosed about the lockdown later this morning.

This is a breaking news situation and more will be updated as it becomes available. Austin Dave contributed to this report.
