To celebrate May as National Bike Month, the city of Santa Clarita is set to host a series of free, bike-themed events in the coming weeks.
Celebrated from coast to coast, the month-long observation is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling, as well as to encourage more people to try biking, according to the League of American Bicyclists.
Santa Clarita, known as a bike-friendly city, has its own plan to celebrate locally.
On Saturday, May 11, cyclists of all ages and experience levels will have a chance to ride together and explore the area’s trail system at the annual Hit the Trail Community Bike Ride, presented by Curtiss-Wright. The event is set from 10 a.m. to noon at Valencia Heritage Park, located at 24155 Newhall Ranch Road.
Mayor Marsha McLean plans to kick off the event with a welcome, followed by guided, non-competitive 4-mile and 9-mile bicycle rides, and a family fair with activities and tricycle races. No registration is required.
Cycling fans can mark their calendars on Wednesday, May 15, for an Amgen Tour of California Stage 4 recap viewing party at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The race recap starts at 7 p.m. Opportunities to win gift cards, signed rider jerseys and raffle prizes will be available.
On Thursday, May 16, those who ditch their cars to ride bikes to work as part of the Bike to Work Day Challenge will have a chance to win prizes and claim giveaways. This challenge is a competition among local businesses to see which employer can get the most employees to bike to work. Visit greensantaclarita.com for more information.
Amgen Tour of California, the nation’s most prestigious cycling race, will pass through Santa Clarita on Saturday, May 18. From 8 a.m. to noon, residents can stop by the Westfield Valencia Town Center on Town Center Drive to get front-row seats to the women’s and men’s final stage start, as well as a free festival and block party.
