A young man was arrested mid-afternoon Wednesday on suspicion of vandalism and making threats.

Deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to initial reports of a man seen brandishing a knife on Chestnut Street, north of Lyons Avenue.

When deputies arrived they found the alleged weapon to be a golf club, not a knife.

The incident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m., prompting a response by at least three deputies for reports of a man “waving a knife around” in Newhall.

“We did take a male into custody,” said Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the SCV Sheriff Station.

“He did not have a knife,” she said, noting the suspect became involved in an argument with a relative.

“He used a golf club to vandalize the victim’s vehicle,” Miller said.
