I have never written a letter to the editor but over the past few months I have been compelled to speak out and speak up. This was prompted primarily by the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Recently, Lois Eisenberg wrote a letter to the editor published Oct. 17 titled, “Jimmy Kimmel and Free Speech.” In the letter she says, “This administration is hellbent on silencing different media outlets, such as NPR and PBS, by stripping them of their federal funds, and this administration is hellbent on silencing others who don’t agree with their damaging agenda. Hundreds of Hollywood and Broadway celebrities have urged Americans to fight to prevent and preserve our constitutional right of free speech.”

Well, this is something I hope we all can agree on no matter which side of the aisle we prefer.

And it’s something I actually did; I took an oath to do just that: “I swear to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.” It is also part of the Oath of Allegiance recited by immigrants during the naturalization ceremonies. Moreover, I would put my life on the line today to protect your right, Ms. Eisenberg, to do so as well.

Furthermore, the rhetoric today has gotten completely out of control. What ever happened to civil discourse? And agreeing to disagree agreeably?

Finally, I would simply like to close by asking you one simple question: “Have you publicly denounced the assassination of Charlie Kirk and all politically driven violence in The Signal letters to the editor or anywhere else?”

If so, I am sorry I missed it.

Listening to opposing views has and always will continue to strengthen our great nation. I just wish we could all do it without resorting to labeling and name calling.
