The Saugus Union School District is scheduled to hold two special meetings regarding the Santa Clarita Elementary School property disposition, according to a news release.

The meetings are scheduled for Oct. 30 and Nov. 6. and will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Bridgeport Elementary School’s multipurpose room.

The school closed in June 2024 due to safety standard requirements under Assembly Bill 300 that essentially ensure all buildings are updated to 1976 standards for earthquake retrofitting. It would cost $25 million to retrofit the entire school, according to a 2023 Signal report, and officials made the decision to close down the school instead.

Since its closure, the public has shown a high level of interest in the fate of the property in numerous governing board meetings over the past two years.

Some ideas bounced around throughout those meetings include transforming it into a recreation center, a community center, a parking structure, and some requesting it should be retrofitted and reopened.

But now, the district’s governing board also must look to understand the “legal responsibility and options when examining the dispositions of district property,” the SUSD news release stated.

“When there are actions to be taken by the board, the agenda will note it. We encourage all members of the community to attend to observe the process and comment on the process to the governing board,” it added.
