The Santa Clarita City Council is expecting to increase the city’s monthly trash rates by just over 3%, which comes to about $12 per year, according to the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting.

The rate increase is within the allowable annual request for the city’s contract with its waste-hauler Burrtec Waste Industries.

The item is on the City Council’s consent calendar, which is for items not planned for discussion. The waste-hauler is asking for a 3.1% increase, which is within the allowable maximum of 4% in its contract, according to the city’s agenda.

“For a standard three-cart bundle, the increase equals $1.16 per month for single-family home waste-collection services,” according to the city’s agenda report. “The current monthly rate is $37.39, and the new rate, if approved by the City Council, would be $38.55, effective Jan. 1.”

Commercial and multifamily homes with a standard 3-yard bin bundle serviced week would see a $7.03 per month increase, adjusting the rate to $233.83 monthly.

Tuesday’s request follows an emergency adjustment earlier this year that was requested due to additional costs the trash-hauler was incurring due to the closure of Chiquita Canyon Landfill.

The rate increase is also similar to one the city approved in 2024.

In November 2024, the council approved an increase of just less than $1 per month for single-family home dwellers who use the standard 96-gallon bins, and $5.87 per month more for the commercial rate to $184.94 per month.

The city announced its 10-year contract with Burrtec Waste in June 2022, with the proposed starting rate for July 2023 of $28.92 for residential pickup and $179.07 for commercial. If approved, the new rate would represent a roughly 30% increase over that, including an emergency adjustment requested after the closure of the landfill.

In May, the Santa Clarita City Council authorized the rate increase for its commercial and residential waste-management service due to the closure of Chiquita Canyon Landfill.

Chiquita abruptly stopped accepting waste Jan. 1, which prompted Burrtec, the city’s contractual waste-hauler, to find an alternate site for the city’s trash, in Sun Valley, according to city officials. The increases were described as being 14% to 25% for residential customers and 6% to 25% for commercial ratepayers, which changes based on container size and frequency.

In order to pay for the difference in cost for trash transportation and disposal rates, the City Council approved the rate hike that comes out to $7.52 per month for the standard residential user who has 96-gallon “trash carts” — for a new total monthly charge of $37.39.
