Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Gave Me Relief from My Autoimmune Disease

One thing many people don’t realize about living with an autoimmune disease is how unpredictable the pain and inflammation can be. Some mornings I feel almost normal, but other days my body seems to turn against me, my joints are stiff, my muscles ache, my skin is sensitive, and I have no energy. For years, I tried different treatments, medications, diets, and supplements, always hoping for steady relief. While some helped a little, nothing made a big difference. That changed when I found hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy didn’t cure my autoimmune disease, but it did something just as important: it helped me manage the pain and inflammation that used to control my life.

This is my story of how oxygen, something so simple, so basic, became one of the most helpful tools in my fight against autoimmune symptoms.

Living with Constant Pain and Inflammation

My autoimmune disease affects different parts of my body, but inflammation has always been the hardest part. It can flare up without warning. One week, my joints are okay. The next, my hands swell so much I can barely hold a cup of coffee. Sometimes my muscles burn from the inside, and other times I’m so tired that getting out of bed feels impossible.

I followed all my doctors’ advice, anti-inflammatories, steroids, immunosuppressants, and physical therapy. Some helped for a while, but others had side effects that were even worse than my symptoms. I was worn out, both physically and emotionally. Chronic pain takes a toll. It makes you stop doing things you used to enjoy and makes you explain again and again why you’re “not feeling well.”

Things changed after a really bad flare. I could barely walk, my fingers hurt too much to bend, and even breathing felt hard because my chest was inflamed. That’s when my rheumatologist suggested I try hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

I didn’t know much about it then, but I was ready to try anything that might help, even a little.

Learning About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

When I first heard about “hyperbaric oxygen therapy,” it sounded complicated and a bit scary. The thought of sitting in a pressurized chamber made me nervous. But after I did some research, I found out it was much simpler than I thought.

HBOT means breathing pure oxygen in a special pressurized room or chamber. This lets your blood carry much more oxygen than normal breathing. That extra oxygen can help:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Decrease swelling
  • Improve circulation
  • Support tissue repair
  • Calm overactive immune responses

For people with autoimmune diseases, which are often driven by inflammation, these effects can make a big difference.

My First HBOT Session

When I went to the hyperbaric center for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. The staff explained everything, helped me get settled in the chamber, and told me it would be a calm experience. And it really was.

As the chamber pressurized, my ears popped gently, like they do on a plane. After that, it felt almost relaxing. I could listen to music, rest, or just breathe while the therapy worked. I didn’t feel the effects right away, but I would soon notice them.

After my first session, I didn’t expect much and tried to stay realistic. But that night, I was surprised, I slept well, without the pain that usually woke me up.

Noticing the First Signs of Relief

It took until my third or fourth HBOT session to notice real changes. My morning stiffness, which usually made the start of my day miserable, began to get better. My joint swelling went down, and my pain changed from sharp and constant to mild and occasional.

Even the skin inflammation I had dealt with for years started to calm down.

I wasn’t cured, but something in my body felt different, calmer and less chaotic.

My rheumatologist explained that HBOT lowers inflammation markers, gets more oxygen to inflamed areas, and helps balance the immune system. For people with autoimmune conditions, these benefits can make the body healthier and help prevent flares.

The Deeper Benefits of HBOT

As I kept going to my sessions, I started to notice even more improvements:

More energy

Chronic inflammation takes away your energy, but as my swelling went down, I felt lighter and more alert.

Less brain fog

With more oxygen, my focus and mental clarity got much better.

Reduced muscle pain

Muscles that used to feel tight and sore started to relax.

Better mobility

Getting up from chairs, walking up stairs, and even typing all got easier.

Fewer flare-ups

My body didn’t feel like it was always fighting itself anymore. I still have flares, but they happen less often and aren’t as bad.

For the first time in years, I felt like I could actually control my symptoms.

The Emotional Healing That Came with Physical Relief

Chronic pain isn’t just physical, it affects your mental health, relationships, work, and confidence. Before HBOT, I was always anxious about when the next flare would hit. I worried about canceling plans, letting people down, or waking up in pain I couldn’t handle.

As the therapy started to help, that fear slowly faded. I woke up with less worry and made plans without being afraid I’d have to cancel. The emotional relief was almost as strong as the physical changes.

I also started doing things I had given up, like walking, cooking, light exercise, and simple hobbies like drawing or writing. When pain takes over your life, getting back even a few of these things feels like a big win.

Why Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Helps Control Pain and Inflammation

HBOT isn’t magic, it’s based on science. The therapy works by:

Delivering oxygen deep into inflamed tissues

Inflamed tissues often don’t get enough blood flow. HBOT pushes oxygen into the places that need it most.

Reducing inflammatory cytokines

These chemicals are what cause autoimmune pain and swelling.

Supporting tissue repair

When your body heals better, inflammation goes down.

Enhancing immune regulation

Autoimmune conditions mean the immune system is too active. HBOT helps calm it down.

Improving overall cellular function

Healthy cells make your whole body healthier. Oxygen is key for all cell functions.

For people with autoimmune diseases, these effects can mean fewer flares, less pain, and better movement.

My Life After Incorporating HBOT

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy didn’t replace my medications or my doctor’s advice, but it became an important part of my treatment. Now, my pain is more under control, my inflammation is easier to manage, and my quality of life is better.

I still have hard days, autoimmune diseases don’t just go away, but now I have many more good days than bad. For someone who used to live with constant pain, that change feels amazing.

Final Thoughts

If you have an autoimmune condition and deal with ongoing pain and inflammation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy might be worth a try. It gave me something medications alone couldn’t, balance, relief, and a chance to live without always fearing flare-ups.

Sometimes the best healing tools aren’t what we expect, they’re the ones that help our bodies do what they’re meant to do.
