The Santa Clarita Planning Commission is scheduled to receive a virtual tour Tuesday at City Hall for the first public look at the Belcaro at Sand Canyon project.
The plan has been touted as similar in design to the Valencia community of the same name, with 341 single-family homes planned for east of Sand Canyon and Lost Canyon roads, and north of Sand Canyon Country Club, according to city records.
The plans are for a gated community “where 55-plus Sand Canyon residents can downsize within the canyon they love, or families in the canyon can move their parents and grandparents to be close to them,” according to a past statement from Adam Browning, president of the developer, New Urban West.
He said the plans also call for more than 4 miles of trails.
City officials said on the agenda that a virtual tour was being offered due to a difficulty in getting to the 193-acre project site.
The plans call for an extension of Lost Canyon Road to the project from its current terminus at Oak Springs Canyon Road, which would require a bridge, according to Jason Crawford, the city’s director of community development, in a March interview. He also said at that time the project was still being worked on by city planners.
“Due to the challenges of providing access to the project site, which is accessed via dirt road and is bisected by an active railroad line, the Planning Commission will receive a presentation of a virtual site tour,” according to the agenda for Tuesday. “City of Santa Clarita staff will present a video and photos for a virtual tour of the project site for the Planning Commission and members of the public. There will not be any direction or decision made about the project.”
City officials said the presentation would be shown in the Carl Boyer Room at City Hall, and is scheduled to start prior to the city’s Planning Commission meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
New Urban West has several Santa Clarita Valley projects active in the planning process, including the Metro Walk project for 498 homes in Canyon Country; The Trails at Lyons Canyon for 510 homes on the west side of The Old Road; and the Sunridge plan for more than 6,500 homes in the center of the SCV.
