Canyon wins big at home, Valencia’s McKell reaches milestone, four teams set to play in QFs

The second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section girls basketball playoffs produced thrilling matchups throughout multiple brackets.  

For the Santa Clarita Valley teams, four out of five teams won in their respective matchups and are set to play Wednesday, the day the quarterfinals are set to be held.  

As for Saturday night’s games, here are scores from the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs:  

Valencia 81, Mira Costa 56: In the second round of the Division 1 playoffs, the Valencia Vikings were on the road and defeated the Mira Costa Mustangs of Manhattan Beach.  

With the win, the Lady Vikings advanced to the quarterfinals and will be on the road again for a matchup against the Troy Warriors of Fullerton.  

In the win over Mira Costa, senior Cara McKell led her team in scoring with 30 points. And with her 30-point performance, she officially became the all-time leading scorer in Valencia girls’ basketball history with 1,919 points.  

As for Troy, the Warriors are coming off a home win over the Brentwood School Eagles of Los Angeles and are ranked 32nd in the Southern Section, according to High School on SI’s computer rankings that determined this year’s playoff seeding.  

The game between the Lady Vikings and Warriors is set to tip off 6 p.m. Wednesday at Troy High School in Fullerton.  

Saugus 57, Heritage 50: In the second round of the Division 2 playoffs, the Saugus Centurions secured the road win over the Heritage Patriots of Menifee.  

In the win, Centurions’ EvaMarie Rios recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds.  

Rachael Correa led all Saugus players in scoring with 19 points and finished the game with a double-double as she tallied 13 rebounds.  

In the quarterfinals, the Centurions are set to host the Portola Bulldogs of Irvine, a team that ended the regular season as the 61st ranked team in the section, according to the computer rankings.  

The game between the Lady Centurions and Bulldogs is set to tip off 7 p.m. Wednesday at Saugus High School.  

Canyon 54, Wiseburn DaVinci 39: In the second round of the Division 3 playoffs, the Canyon Cowboys came away with the home win over the Wiseburn Da Vinci Wolves of El Segundo.  

In the win, senior Shannen Wilson had a big performance as she led the team in scoring with 22 points on 10-for-14 shooting. Sophomore Darby Dunn finished second on the team with 17 points and had an all-around game with 10 rebounds and five assists.  

With the win, the Cowboys are set to return home on Wednesday for the quarterfinals and hosts the visiting St. Margaret’s Tartans of San Juan Capistrano.  

In the second round, the Tartans are coming off a home win over the Poly Riverside Bears.  

The game between the Cowboys and Tartans is set to tip off 7 p.m. at Canyon High School.  

Santa Fe 48, Hart 23: In the second round of the Division 6 playoffs, the Hart Hawks were defeated on the road by the Santa Fe Chiefs.  

With the loss, the Lady Hawks are eliminated from the playoffs.  

Santa Clarita Christian 53, Victor Valley Christian 34: In the second round of the Division 9 playoffs, the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals secured the home win over Victory Valley Christian.  

With the win, the Cardinals advanced to the quarterfinals and are set to host the visiting Vista Del Lago Ravens of Moreno Valley on Wednesday.  

The Ravens are coming off a blowout win over the NOVA Academy Eagles of Santa Ana in the second round.  

The game between the Cardinals and Ravens is set to tip off at 4:30 p.m. at Santa Clarita Christian School.
