Dozens of Saugus High School students walked out during their sixth period to the nearby Central Park to protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement with signs, face paint, and flags on Tuesday afternoon.
However, the protest was cut short when a student reported being threatened by an older man who said he would shoot the young man in the face. The incident was reported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, but after arriving at the park, deputies reported that no weapon nor evidence of a crime was found.
“He was saying something, and my friend was just like, ‘Do you want to have a political argument about this?’ and he was like, ‘I’ll shoot you in the face,’” said Bronson K., a freshman at Saugus High who did not wish to give his last name.
Bronson was joined by Saugus High senior Clarence B., who also wished to not give his last name, and echoed that it is “insane to say that to someone.”
When asked why Bronson and Clarence decided to do the walk out and what fueled their activism, they both said things need to change.
“Yeah, I mean, as a Native American, being on stolen land it’s just crazy that someone could try to push their stuff onto other people. It’s just, like, it doesn’t make sense, and why can’t everybody live along and (be) equal, as it should be,” Clarence said.
Bronson added that people are just too comfortable.
“Change needs to happen. It’s not enough. There’s not enough people speaking out. It’s just a big issue in the United States as a whole, East Coast, West Coast, North, South, just a big issue,” Bronson said.
Sgt. Juan Muralles with the SCV Sheriff’s Station said deputies received a call of a possible person with a gun around 3:38 p.m. and arrived about seven minutes later.
Muralles added that when deputies arrived at Central Park, there was no evidence of a crime and no weapon was recovered.
