Boys’ volleyball playoff preview: Five teams to play in CIF first round

The California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section released its boys’ volleyball playoff pairings with five teams from across the Santa Clarita Valley set to play in the first round on Wednesday.  

Here’s a look at the first-round matchups:  

Valencia vs. Kennedy  

The Vikings, who are this season’s Foothill League champions, were placed into the Division 3 bracket and will host their first-round matchup.  

The Vikings are set to welcome the Kennedy Fighting Irish of La Palma, who are the champions of the Empire League.  

The matchup between the Vikings and Fighting Irish is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Valencia High School on Wednesday.  

Saugus vs. Newbury Park 

The Centurions, who finished second in the Foothill League standings, have been placed in the Division 3 category and host in the first round.  

For the first round, the Centurions will host the Newbury Park Panthers, who ended the regular season as champion of the Marmonte League. 

The contest between the Centurions and Panthers is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Saugus High School on Wednesday.  

Canyon at Foothill  

The Cowboys, who ended the year with an 8-4 Foothill League record and third in the standings, are the third team to be placed in the Division 3 bracket but will be on the road for the first matchup.  

The Foothill Knights of Santa Ana will be Canyon’s first-round matchup and will host the visiting Cowboys.  

The matchup between the Knights and Cowboys is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Foothill High School in Santa Ana on Wednesday.  

Castaic vs. Flintridge Prep 

For the first time in school history, the Castaic Coyotes are in the playoffs after a fourth-place finish in the Foothill League standings. And in the Division 5 bracket, the Coyotes secured the luck of the draw and will host their first-ever boys’ volleyball playoff game at Castaic High School. 

The Coyotes will match up against the Flintridge Prep Wolves of La Cañada, who ended the regular season in second in the Prep League with a 5-3 record.  

The contest between the Wolves and Coyotes is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Castaic High School on Wednesday.  

Trinity Classical Academy vs. Canyon Springs 

This season, the Knights enter the postseason as the champions of the Heritage League for the first time in school history.  

The Knights have been placed into the Division 7 bracket and will host their first-round matchup against the visiting Canyon Springs Cougars of Moreno Valley.  

The matchup between the Knights and Cougars is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Newhall Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday.
