The urge to get away doesn’t always require a full tank of gas or a weekend on the calendar. In Santa Clarita, that restless, road-trip state of mind — equal parts discovery, nostalgia and escape — can be satisfied close to home. From boutique hotel stays, open-air markets, and cinematic desert landscapes, locals are finding creative ways to capture the feeling of travel without ever leaving the valley.

Whether it’s a leisurely morning spent browsing farm stands, an overnight stay that feels worlds away from routine or a quick detour into wide-open terrain, these nearby destinations offer a change of pace. Consider it a road trip reimagined, where the journey begins just minutes from your front door.

Hotel Lexen

Hotel Lexen offers a staycation experience rooted in both place and atmosphere, blending the historic character of Old Town Newhall with a clean, contemporary design. Set along Main Street — one of Santa Clarita’s most frequently filmed backdrops, seen in series like S.W.A.T. and Goliath — the boutique hotel places guests right in the middle of a living film set, where everyday strolls can feel cinematic.

Its location in the city’s arts and entertainment district adds to the appeal. Restaurants, live music, shopping, and nightlife are all within walking distance, making it easy to build a weekend itinerary without ever getting in the car.

Inside, Hotel Lexen leans into a minimalist, European-inspired aesthetic influenced by Finnish design — simple, functional, and calming. Guest rooms are thoughtfully appointed to feel like a retreat from the pace of daily life, while shared spaces invite guests to linger, whether for a quiet moment, a casual meeting, or an evening drink at the Lexen Bar.

For a more elevated escape, the penthouse suite offers a private terrace and spacious living area, adding a layer of luxury to the experience.

The goal, as reflected throughout the property, is not just to host visitors, but to immerse them in the rhythm of Old Town Newhall — where a short stay can feel like a true getaway, just minutes from home.

Hotel Lexen is located at 24219 Railroad Ave. in Newhall. For more information, call (661) 505-7500 or visit lexenboutique.com.

Farmers Markets

For a fresh-air alternative to the traditional road trip, SCV Farmers Markets offer a rotating, open-air experience that brings the flavors of California’s agricultural regions straight to Santa Clarita. With three weekly markets in Newhall, Canyon Country, and Valencia, locals can map out their own weekend (or midweek) outing — each location offering its own rhythm, crowd, and curated mix of vendors.

The Newhall market, held Saturday mornings along Main Street, pairs especially well with a stroll through Old Town, while Valencia’s Sunday market offers a relaxed start to the day. Canyon Country’s Wednesday evening market, meanwhile, adds a twilight twist, blending grocery shopping with a casual night out.

What sets the markets apart is the range and quality of vendors, many of whom bring products rooted in specific regions and traditions. Bakers like 4th St Baker rotate selections of small-batch pastries made with premium ingredients, while Achadinha Cheese Company, a fourth-generation Sonoma County dairy, offers pasture-raised cheeses, butter, and yogurt. Antipasti LA adds an Italian touch with handmade pastas, sauces, and imported specialties, and Dancing Crow Vineyard pours award-winning wines sourced from historic Lake County vines.

Vasquez Rocks

For those craving wide-open spaces and a change of scenery, Vasquez Rocks Natural Area delivers a dramatic desert landscape just a short drive from Santa Clarita. Located in Agua Dulce, the 945-acre park is known for its striking, tilted rock formations — instantly recognizable from countless films and television shows — yet it also offers a quieter, more immersive kind of escape.

The land carries deep cultural significance as the ancestral Tataviam village of Mapipinga, adding a layer of history to its visual impact. Today, visitors can explore miles of hiking and equestrian trails, including a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail, while taking in native plants and wildlife that thrive in the protected habitat.

Vasquez Rocks offers a simple but striking way to step outside the routine. Whether it’s a morning hike, a picnic beneath the rock formations, or just a chance to take in the quiet, cinematic landscape, the park captures the feeling of a road trip destination—without the long drive.

Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and Nature Center is located at 10700 W. Escondido Canyon Road in Agua Dulce. For more information, call (661) 268-0840. 
