29th Annual Haunted Jailhouse Serves Up Family Fun and New Dollhouse Maze

Dressed as superheroes, animals, a claw machine and everything in between, people gathered at the Haunted Jailhouse, hosted by the sheriff’s station and the Santa Clarita Boys & Girls Club, to celebrate the Halloween season with trick-or-treating, games, photo booths, food, costume contests, a petting zoo and a dollhouse-themed haunted maze.

CIF-SS Releases Fall 2018 Football Playoff Brackets

The California Intercollegiate Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) has released the bracket for the Fall 2018 11-man football playoff games. All playoff games are scheduled to take place on Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Local Author Ron Fulleman Releases Book To Help Older Students with Low Reading Levels

Ron Fulleman, an author and substitute teacher with the William S. Hart Union High School District, writes stories for students who have a high interest in reading but are at a low reading level, or Hi/Lo. His fourth and most recent book, “Faces in the Flames: A Ghost Story,” was published in August and is based on the real-life WWII oil tanker USS Mississinewa, which was the first ship to be sunk by Japanese suicide submarines and on which Fulleman’s father served.

18th Annual Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair Helps Shelter Animals Find New Homes

The Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair, which held its 18th annual fair on Sunday at William S. Hart Park in Newhall, featured more than 200 dogs, cats and rabbits for adoption along with vaccinations, 70 different pet supply vendors, a raffle, dog show and performances by the Sundance Dog Team.

Community celebrates Kids Music Day for the first time in Santa Clarita

Kids Music Day is an international celebration created by the Keep Music Alive nonprofit in order to promote the importance of youth musical education. The event can take place any time Oct. 1-14, according to the Kids Music Day website. The Kids Music Day celebration was sponsored by Oksana Kolesnikova and and her husband, Alex Concas, through their education and lifestyle support agency, Oksana Management Group, or OMG.

Kimzar Kollectables Attracts Hundreds to Fourth Santa Clarita Comic & Toy Expo

The Santa Clarita Comic & Toy Expo, hosted for the fourth time by Kimzar Kollectables, took place at College of the Canyons. This year’s event featured numerous vendors and artists, including Kimzar, Brave New World Comics and Dreamworld Comics, as well as raffles, a scavenger hunt, face painting and activities for kids.

Santa Clarita Science Teacher Mike Koegle Nominated for National LifeChanger Award

Koegle, who teaches biology, health and a biotechnology course framed as a murder mystery at Academy of the Canyons (AOC), was nominated for the 2018-19 national LifeChanger of the Year award by AOC Campus Supervisor Kane Crawford, and by an anonymous student, due to his passion and dedication toward teaching and his students.

The Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer hosted its 25th annual Evening Under the Stars Gala Dinner and Charity Auction Saturday at the Valencia Country Club, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the fight against pediatric cancer and to provide help to families and children battling the disease.

Santa Clarita Chalk Festival kicks off after three-year hiatus

Rudy Pavini spent two and half hours on the morning of his 84th birthday recreating Monet’s “Red Boats, Argenteuil” out of chalk on asphalt. Pavini, a muralist and retired teacher, is one of the 34 artists and art groups participating in the 2018 Santa Clarita Chalk Festival presented by the Old Town Newhall Association.
