Valencia High School’s DECA, Distributive Education Clubs of America, team’s mini competition took place at Mark Twain Elementary School in Riverside, California. Twenty Valencia high school students competed on November 5 for the first competition of the 2016-2017 DECA year. The categories that the Vikings participated and won awards in were Sports and Entertainment, Food Marketing, Retail Merchandising, and the Hospitality Team Decision Making events. These categories consisted of a roleplay and a 100 question test. The new members dominated the competition and represented Valencia well. Makenna Minniti, a senior at Valencia, was one of the newest members who placed for an overall award of 3rd in her category of Sports and Entertainment. Sabrina Acosta, a sophomore, placed 2nd in her role play event for Sports and Entertainment. Sid Sen, a junior, won 2nd for the testing event and was a finalist for the overall category in the Hospitality Team Decision Making event with his partner Mason McBride. Pej Thomas, Michelle Marks, and Andrew Gonzales were all finalists for role plays in Sports and Entertainment. Returning members like Joel Beckwith won 1st and Mark Gray won 3rd in Retail and Merchandising. Chris Carlson won 2nd and Kristen Beckwith won 3rd in the Food Marketing series event. Pablo Gratas was a finalist for Sports and Entertainment and Shani Tyson was a finalist for the testing of the Food Marketing Series.
