It is commonly accepted that it takes a village to raise a child, but It also takes a village to live a fulfilled life. The City of Santa Clarita’s two community centers provide a venue where residents can come together and participate in affordable activities that enrich their lives. With this benefit in mind, the City continues to pursue a new, bigger facility for the Canyon Country Community Center.
In serving the growing Canyon Country community and in keeping with our initial plans, we are excited about the future of the Canyon Country Community Center. For several years, it has functioned as a “hub” for programs and activities such as family game nights, after-school programs and senior classes. However, its location at 18792 Flying Tiger Drive was always intended to be a temporary site until a larger, permanent facility could be built elsewhere.
The new Canyon Country Community Center will be located at the intersection of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway on a 6.5 acre, city-owned site, which will allow for a 20,000 square foot floor plan. Your input at public meetings has helped shape the site master plan, including the physical amenities as well as programming elements. During the first round of public engagement workshops, the focus was to hear your desire for potential programs. During the second round, the intent was to learn what amenities you wanted. Based on your feedback, we are planning to include features like a gymnasium, teaching kitchen and multi-purpose activity rooms. An events area, open play space, walkways and landscaping are a few additional amenities in the plans.
In accordance with Santa Clarita 2020, improvements to the community center fall under the Building and Creating Community theme, which seeks to “Build vital infrastructure to provide services and programs that enrich a growing and diverse community.” Santa Clarita 2020 is a five-year plan that was created to guide the City’s major work efforts within six quality of life themes, so as to best prioritize resources, achieve milestones and maintain unwavering commitment to offering the best services and facilities. As of now, the community center project has been approved by the Santa Clarita City Council, the Environmental Review is underway and the architecture and landscape is currently in design. In the next six months, completion of the Environmental Review and the building design will be the priority. The new community center is on track to be completed in the year 2020.
As work progresses, classes and activities will carry on as usual. Be sure to check santa-clarita.com/CCCC to make sure you don’t miss fun and interesting classes designed for specific age groups and interests; from dance workouts to toddler cooking classes to senior social soirees.
