Two children were injured and efforts made to airlift them to safety from a solo vehicle crash near Quail Lake Road in which an SUV blew a rear tire, left the highway and plunged down an embankment in the Grapevine late Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, just north of Quail Lake Road, when a large black SUV left the roadway and plunged over the side, according to reports received by the California Highway Patrol.

An official with the Los Angeles County Fire Department told The Signal at 6:45 p.m. that two children had been injured in the crash.

Efforts were underway as of 6:30 p.m. to find a suitable place to land a rescue helicopter for the two pediatric patients.

Reports received by the CHP indicated that the SUV had landed on its roof.
