A young woman suspected of drunk driving slammed into a light pole in Newhall Wednesday night, sending the broken light crashing onto the roadway.
The motorist, whose identity has not been disclosed but who appeared to one witness as in her early 20’s, suffered unspecified injuries in the crash.
The single-vehicle traffic collision happened shortly after 10:45 p.m. Wednesday on Apple Street near 8th Street when a white 2016 Nissan Altima grazed the residential fence of an Apple Street resident and hit the pole.
Firefighters arriving at the scene at 10:56 p.m. called for an “advanced life support” ambulance team, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
Paramedics were seen treating the motorist at the scene.
“The call came in as an auto collision, a vehicle into a pole,” the Fire Department spokesman said. “The street light broke and was covering the road and sidewalk. No one was trapped.”
The downed pole fell on wires which were pulled in the collision.
Fire officials notified work crews with the City of Santa Clarita Public Works and with Southern California Edison to cleanup of wreckage debris, the Fire Department spokesman said.
An official with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station told The Signal Thursday morning that the driver in the crash is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
One Apple Street resident who witnessed the response by emergency response crews said he saw deputies handcuff the woman and place her in the back of a sheriff’s vehicle.
Firefighters remained at the crash scene for more than an hour.
