A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of five outstanding warrants and arrested on suspicion of driving a stolen Oklahoma vehicle and engaging in a felony pursuit beginning at Interstate 5, southbound near Lake Hughes Road, on Wednesday morning, according to an official with the California Highway Patrol Newhall-area Office.
The name of the suspect is Anthony Johnson, 23, of California.
The five outstanding warrants include attempted murder, false imprisonment, felony domestic violence, burglary and criminal threats with two of the warrants coming from Contra Costa and Oakland in Northern California, according to Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, public information officer for the CHP.
At 9:17 a.m., officers made a traffic stop on Chevy Silverado pickup truck and saw that the vehicle was a reported stolen vehicle out of Oklahoma, Burgos-Lopez said.
However, the driver did have a California driver’s license, he continued.
The Silverado took off, starting a pursuit at 9:23 a.m. on the I-5 southbound, according to Burgos-Lopez.
The driver was going 100 mph and crashed into a Honda Odyssey and a big rig on the I-5 southbound at Calgrove Boulevard, Burgos-Lopez said.
Two people were detained, with the driver being arrested on his warrants, suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle and enacting a pursuit, according to Burgos-Lopez.
Burgos-Lopez added that the driver was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for medical clearance and will be booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The passenger of the Silverado was a 22-year-old woman, Burgos-Lopez added.
The big rig driver was not transported, but the Honda driver was, according to Burgos-Lopez.
There was a temporary stop of traffic in all the lanes to move the cars to the right side of the freeway, but they have since reopened, Burgos-Lopez said.
