Question: Hey Robert, Stan C. here. I want to purchase a jacuzzi for the back deck, but there is not adequate electricity in the location. Is this something that the average homeowner who is handy can do to set up properly? Please share advice on the process for this. Thank you.

Answer: Stan, this is without a doubt, a job for a licensed and insured electrician. Do not skimp on this — do it once and do it right. You will need permits. Your electrician will facilitate this — and be sure that you hire only an electrician who goes the proper route, through the city’s Building and Safety department.

Most hot tubs these days require 50-60 amps on a dedicated circuit. A qualified electrician will first look at your panel to determine if there is even space to add this. Once the permits are approved, they’ll then have to go through the inspection process and ultimately receive final approval. Only at that time will you be safe to have a unit delivered and installed.

Note that you will need to have an adequate surface, such as a concrete pad, to set this on. Once this is completed and done properly, you’ll be able to enjoy it, worry free. Best of luck.
