Deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station took a stolen vehicle suspect into custody following a containment in the Newhall area that prompted a soft lockdown for a nearby elementary school on Thursday morning, according to SCV Sheriff’s Station officials.
When patrolling the Newhall area at approximately 11:15 a.m., deputies came across a possible stolen vehicle on the 23000 block of Lyons Avenue, according to Deputy Charlie Upchurch, who was on the scene of the incident.

After confirming the vehicle was stolen, deputies detained a white van at gunpoint before they learned the suspect was actually inside of the local Doc’s Inn Cocktails bar, Upchurch added, and the suspect fled the area through the back.
Because it was unknown where the suspect may have been traveling, deputies advised Wiley Canyon Elementary School to go on a soft lockdown at 11:27 a.m., as a precaution, but there was no indication the suspect was on campus, according to Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the SCV Sheriff’s Station.
After setting up a containment in the area, and with the help of a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department aerial unit, the suspect was found and taken into custody without further incident on Fourl Road, about four blocks away from the initial location where the stolen vehicle was located.
