Every once in a while, Jonathan Kraut has an idea that makes sense. His last New Year’s wish (commentary, Jan. 27) was the establishment of a truth court to fact-check statements made by public officials. According to Jonathan, “Elected and appointed officials should be significantly fined for each blatantly false statement made while in office.”
To see how this would work, let me choose three public officials at random: Gavin Newsom, Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff. All three are serial liars. Every time each of them opens his mouth, nothing but lies come out. Everywhere they go, a little counter would hang over their heads with fines adding up quicker than the national debt. Since they never spend their own money, just yours and mine, the California deficit would grow faster than Ilhan Omar’s net worth.
Jonathan, if your idea was just applied to California, a state loaded with habitual, liberal liars, the outflowing of state money would make the bullet train to nowhere seem like the bargain of the century. Be careful what you wish for.
