Buzz Classic Movies features a classic mystery-thriller this week with a Saturday night showing of “The Red House,” starring Edward G. Robinson, Lon McCallister and Judith Anderson.
The 1947 film has earned an 83% “fresh” rating from the critics based on eight reviews, and a 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter” based on more than 500 ratings.
“Meg (Allene Roberts) lives with her adoptive parents, Pete (Edward G. Robinson) and Ellen Morgan (Judith Anderson). When Nath (Lon McCallister), a classmate of Meg’s, comes to help on their farm, Pete repeatedly tells Meg and Nath to stay out of the surrounding woods,” says the Rotten Tomatoes summary of the movie. “Out of curiosity, they disobey, and Pete is irate, subsequently hiring Teller (Rory Calhoun) to guard the woods. As Pete’s rage devolves into madness, the kids start to discover the dark secrets that are buried in the nearby land.”
“A peculiar thriller with some horror overtones. It conjures up a wholesome small-town feel, complete with nosy neighbors and gossip, and an undercurrent that grows increasingly darker,” critic Jeffrey M. Anderson wrote on the Combustible Celluloid website.
“The Red House” streams at 8 p.m. Saturday on The Signal’s streaming channel, The Buzz, available at buzzscv.com as well as streaming platforms including Roku and Apple TV.
