News release

Keep your eyes open because you may just stumble upon a hidden piece of pottery somewhere in the Santa Clarita Valley. These pieces aren’t lost; they’ve been intentionally placed by the SCV Potters Group as part of their annual SCV Abandoned Art Project, starting Friday and ending at the SCV Potters Spring Sale on May 2.

During this interactive, city-wide event, local potters will “abandon” handmade pottery in plain sight at various locations throughout the SCV, the group said in a news release. Each piece will be clearly visible, unwrapped and tagged with a note inviting the finder to either keep it or leave it for someone else to discover.

Clues to the pottery’s whereabouts will be posted on the group’s Facebook and Instagram pages, “SCVAbandonedArt.” Community members can follow these pages to receive real-time hints about hidden pottery and increase their chances of finding a piece. “Finders” are encouraged to take a picture of their “find” and to post it on social media.

The SCV Potters Group has been undertaking this project for more than eight years. “Hiding art for our community to find never gets old,” founders Marlene Bernstein and Susan Grogan said in a prepared statement. “We love seeing the excitement from people who discover the pieces and share their photos and stories online.”

The one-week art hunt culminates at the SCV Potters Fall Sale on May 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Castaic at 30460 Cartagena Place.
