The long-awaited United States Post Office’s return to Newhall is anticipated to open at its new location, at 23636 Lyons Avenue, in mid-January 2017, according to city officials.
“It is my understanding that they are just finishing up some of the final work on that and hope to open after the holidays sometime at the end of January,” said Jason Crawford, marketing and economic development manager for Santa Clarita.
Susan Recchia, USPS spokesperson, confirmed the January 2017 opening of the Lyons Avenue location.
“The plan is to open the office following Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend on Jan. 17,” Recchia said.
The original Lyons Avenue postal office operated until November 2014. After its closure, a temporary location was set up at 25548 The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch.
Santa Clarita residents and the city petitioned for a post office to be reopened in the Newhall area.
By May 2015, the United States Postal Service was looking at moving the Newhall Post Office —back to Newhall, officials said.
Before a new post office could open, however, in August of this year Newhall Post Office announced that it was being evicted from its temporary location at 25548 The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch.
During the interim period, the Newhall Post Office opened another temporary location down the street, at 24201 The Old Road.
Post Office officials told the Signal that the office’s new location on Lyons Avenue would open before Thanksgiving of this year.
However, the location’s opening was delayed to January 2017 for parking lot and sidewalk work, according to USPS officials.
“The shell of the building is complete,” Recchia said. “Right now what we’re waiting on is the parking lot resurfacing.”
Now, construction work is expected to be on track for a January 2017 opening.
