Sulphur Springs Board to review state accountability tool

The Sulphur Springs Union School District Governing Board will evaluate a recently-approved State Board of Education accountability tool which includes local, state and federal accountability elements at the board’s regular meeting Wednesday night.

Expected to launch in March 2017, the California School Dashboard integrates various levels of accountability to evaluate schools, identifies strengths and weaknesses, and provides targeted assistance.

This continuous improvement system, required by the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), evaluates local educational agencies’ (LEAs) and schools’ performance in “areas critical to students’ preparedness for college and career.”

The dashboard will collect performance data, reports and demographic information and will be made available to stakeholder groups and the public.

It will include information on six state performance indicators and four local indicators, which contribute to the district’s LCFF priority.

LEAs will then be rated on a combination of factors, including status, year-by-year comparisons and overall change, to be assigned to one of five performance levels.

With the California School Dashboard, LEAs will be more focused on addressing disparities among student groups and supporting local strategic planning.

The State Board of Education sees the California School Dashboard more useful than the previous Academic Performance Index because it relies on more than just test scores to assign a number, or performance level, to a school.

Governing Board members are also expected to announce the district’s participation in the second annual Santa Clarita Valley Youth Art Showcase on March 25 at the Santa Clarita Activities Centre.

At the event, the district will host an interactive arts booth titled “Putting the A(rts) in STEAM” that will include three different arts activities focused on STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, Mathematics).

The district band will also perform at the event from 12:50 p.m. to 1:20 p.m.

Additional Agenda Items:

  • Call for special meeting March 15 at 8 a.m. to visit Fair Oaks Community School, Golden Oak Community School and Valley View Community School
  • Approve therapy in action individual service agreement
  • Approve new Board Policy: Debt Issuance and Management
