The All-CIF Southern Section boys and girls soccer teams, released this week, reflected a season of firsts for the Santa Clarita Valley.
Saugus High boys soccer advanced to the first CIF title game in program history. Centurions Josh De Leon and James Johnson made the Division 4 team.
West Ranch girls soccer won a playoff game for the first time ever. Aliyah Satterfield became the Wildcats’ first-ever All-CIF player, earning a spot in Division 2.
Albert Einstein Academy secured the first Omega League boys soccer title in school history. Samy Couja represented the Rockets in Division 7.
“I didn’t really think about it,” Satterfield said of whether earning All-CIF was a goal. “Honestly, my main goal this year was to win league. That didn’t happen. But we also made our second goal to make the second round of playoffs. I didn’t really expect (All-CIF) at all.”
Satterfield, a senior Pepperdine University commit, scored 19 goals and assisted on 12 others.
Johnson, a senior, scored 28 goals for Saugus, which lost to Bellflower in the CIF-SS D4 final but rebounded to advance to the semifinals of the CIF SoCal Regional D4 playoffs.
De Leon scored 13 goals on the year and found the All-CIF nod a bit of a surprise.
“I didn’t know I played that well. I didn’t know I played well enough to be selected,” he said.
But…
“I’ve been putting a lot of work into being a better player and making the All-CIF team” vindicates that hard work.
Couja’s efforts also culminated in an All-CIF honor. He scored 19 goals and assisted on 11, helping the Rockets to a 9-0 mark in Omega League play.
Hart girls soccer went unbeaten in Foothill League play for the fourth straight time this year, and seniors Taylor Scott and Kassie Matthews were at the center of it.
Both made the Division 1 All-CIF team after Hart advanced to the semifinals where it was knocked out by Mater Dei of Santa Ana.
Valencia boys soccer’s Josh Ferguson and Cesar Dominguez earned All-CIF in Division 3 after leading the Vikings to their second straight Foothill League title and the CIF quarterfinals.
Ferguson finished the year with 21 goals. Dominguez finished with 11.
