Who are you? Who are your ancestors? Where do you come from? When did your ancestors arrive in the United States? These are just some of the questions that can be answered when you research your family tree.

On March 21, you will have the chance to answer some of those questions, or, at least, find out how to answer those questions at the annual Family History and Genealogy Fair to be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The fair will be held at the Valencia Family History Genealogy Center, which was established in 1978. It is open to the public 45 hours each week.

The all-volunteer staff of research experts assist interested patrons in researching their family tree. The center’s equipment includes computers with free access to premium websites, microfilm and microfiche readers with access to more than 2 million rolls of microfilm, printers, scanners and a book library.

Monthly or twice monthly classes are held at the center throughout the year on a variety of topics.

The Santa Clarita Valley Family History and Genealogy Fair is a free event hosted each year by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is open to the public and all are welcome. The day is, however, limited to the exploration of genealogy and how to research and preserve your genealogy and family history.

Experts and professionals in family history will help participants discover tools and techniques for finding out more about your family tree and ancestors through live and video presentations.

Among the topics at the fair:

Discover how to find names to add to your family tree.

Learn new techniques to preserve your family legacy.

Find out how to share your discoveries with others.

Workshops

The day will consist of a number of workshops with the majority focused on family history research. The presenters have been recruited from the ranks of local research experts. Other classes will be by professional experts in family history and genealogy that come from Roots Tech 2019, the world’s largest family history event.

Whether you are a beginner and have never used the premier family history and genealogy tools or have more advanced experience, the fair will offer something for every level of genealogy exploration.

Among the workshop topics:

Finding female ancestors

Using Family Search to solve genealogy problems

Digitally organizing genealogy “stuff” for next of kin

Writing a personal history and interviewing others

Connecting DNA matches, obituaries, death notices and funeral records

Family history in the palm of your hand

Finding ancestors, beginning genealogy

The silent language of stones. Reading gravestones through symbols and carvings

Box lunch available

Box lunches will be available for purchase so you can attend a full day of workshops. The lunches are $8 per person, payable the day of the event (cash only). Reserve your lunch ahead of time when you register.

Family-friendly event

This community event is family-friendly and all youth ages 12-18 are invited to attend and develop their own skills learning family history research. It promises to be a day to build families.

Registration and tickets

Preregistration is not required, however if there is a class you wish to attend you will have priority admission if you preregister. Participants can fill out preferences, and reserve workshop admission, on the order page when you register. In addition, if you want a box lunch on the day of the event, preregister before March 20.
