Some of the recent events that have taken place in the race to represent California’s 25th Congressional District couldn’t be more fitting in terms of highlighting the cavernous difference between the candidates in this race.

When I entered this race more than a year ago, I did so because I felt, as I still do, that the people of our district need and deserve a representative they can be proud of in Washington.

We need a return to decency and integrity in this office.

I believe in lower taxes, supporting businesses and their employees, and respecting those who have served our country laying their life on the line to defend our freedoms.

More than anything, however, I’ve witnessed the liberal and destructive policies coming out of Sacramento that are crushing our families and their way of life.

More and more taxes, legislation like Assembly Bill 5, which is killing our gig economy and driving jobs out of the state.

It’s unsustainable and the last thing we need is to take those policies to Washington, D.C.

It’s pretty clear that my opponent and I are on two different wave lengths when it comes to what we believe is best for the future of our home.

Christy Smith went to Sacramento and promised voters she wouldn’t raise taxes — a promise she broke by more than $3 billion.

Smith promised to not be a hair-on-fire liberal but has advocated for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal and voted for AB 5.

Her campaign is endorsed by and run on a continuation of policies of the previous representative who was forced to leave office in disgrace.

And, in the ultimate level of immaturity that is unbecoming of any elected official, much less someone seeking to represent us in Washington, Smith recently denigrated all of the men and women who have laid their lives on the line to defend our country.

I’m not a politician. I’ve never run for political office. I am a former Navy fighter pilot and small businessman who will be an independent voice for Southern California in Washington.

I am a first-generation American whose father immigrated from Mexico and who believes we need to stop illegal immigration.

I’ve seen the disastrous tax hikes and socialist-style policies coming out of Sacramento and we absolutely cannot let that take hold in Washington.

The last year and a half has been an embarrassment for our district and it’s time we restore integrity to our representation in our nation’s capitol.

Now, more than ever, we need leaders, not partisan bickering.  And we need to pay attention and vote.

Mike Garcia is a Santa Clarita Valley resident and Republican candidate for the 25th Congressional District.
