I am writing this letter in support of Michele Jenkins, who has served for over 30 years on the College of the Canyons board of trustees. As an incumbent, she has the knowledge and experience necessary to support the college’s mission to provide instructional programs and training for local businesses and public safety training, to enhance our students’ transfer success and to ensure ALL of our students have access to the education they deserve.

As the chair of the COC Foundation Audit Committee and member of the COC Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee, I have firsthand experience with the fiscal integrity of the college’s finances, including clean audits during my involvement and I understand for over 20 years, not only in the capital construction funds, but also the district and Foundation funds. The fiscal stability and credibility enables the college to build beautiful facilities and infrastructure where our students can achieve their educational goals. The Foundation’s ability to be effective in fundraising for instructional programs is because of the district’s fiscal stability.

In precarious economic times, when our revenues are not predictable, we need someone who understands Sacramento politics, the complexity of the funding formulas and metrics and is astute enough to advocate effectively to help ensure we get the funding needed to serve our students. Michele is fiscally astute and understands what it takes to maintain fiscal stability. It is my understanding that through six recessions, the college has NEVER laid off a full-time employee nor implemented furloughs or salary cuts.

Michele is passionate about the students and tirelessly represents their interests in the community by ensuring that we are fiscally sound.

I support Michele as the incumbent for her reelection to the Santa Clarita Community College District board of trustees. Please join me in voting for Michele Jenkins for Area 4 on Nov. 3.
