A fatality was reported on northbound Interstate 5 south of Smokey Bear Road after a woman and a man took drugs and were found in a Volvo XC60 at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to an official with California Highway Patrol Newhall-area Office.

A multi-vehicle traffic collision on the right shoulder of the freeway was reported at the same time that was unrelated to the fatality, according to CHP Traffic Management officials.

The far right lane was blocked, and there was property damage, too, according to Officer Michael Nasir with Traffic Management.

The woman requested assistance after she woke up to the man being unconscious and unresponsive, according to Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, public information officer with the CHP.

The woman admitted to taking drugs with the man earlier in the day, Burgos-Lopez said.

Burgos-Lopez added that the vehicle was an unreported stolen vehicle as well.

The woman was transported to a local hospital and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel pronounced the man dead on the scene, Burgos-Lopez said.

Officers cited the woman due to the stolen vehicle and released her to go to the hospital, Burgos-Lopez said.

The road reopened at 4:56 p.m., Nasir said.

There is no additional information at the time of this publication, Burgos-Lopez said.
