As Santa Clarita turns 38, we’re not just celebrating another year — we’re honoring the vision that made cityhood possible and the bright future still ahead. When our city incorporated in 1987, it was a community in transition. The area was growing rapidly, but without the benefit of local control. Residents saw their tax dollars leaving the valley, while their roads, parks and infrastructure struggled to keep up.

As one of those early visionaries who fought for cityhood, we did so because we believed in Santa Clarita’s potential. We knew that with local leadership and a shared sense of purpose, we could create a city that honors its past, protects its natural beauty and plans wisely for the future.

Today, that vision has come to life in so many ways. Cityhood has transformed Santa Clarita into one of California’s most desirable places to live, work and play. Every dollar collected here stays here — reinvested into the amenities, programs and services that enrich our daily lives.

From building new roads and bridges to enhancing public safety, expanding parks and recreation opportunities and supporting local businesses, our city continues to thrive under the strong foundation laid nearly four decades ago.

This year alone, we reached several incredible milestones. We officially welcomed our 39th and 40th parks — the Pioneer Oil Refinery Park and William S. Hart Park.

The addition of Hart Park, transferred from Los Angeles County to the city, represents more than just another open space. It’s a preservation of history — a living link to the roots of Santa Clarita’s story. William S. Hart, the world’s first great cowboy movie star, made his home here and helped establish this valley as the birthplace of Western film. His legacy continues to inspire generations through the treasures displayed inside the Hart Museum — from his silent film memorabilia to the personal artifacts that offer a glimpse into a remarkable era.

That cinematic heritage lives on today through events like Silents Under the Stars, hosted by the Friends of Hart Park, where residents gather under the night sky to enjoy William S. Hart’s timeless films. These screenings are more than entertainment — they are an experience that connects us across generations, reminding us of the artistry, character and pioneering spirit that helped shape Santa Clarita’s identity.

Just as we preserve our history, we continue to protect our natural environment. Santa Clarita is home to more than 13,000 acres of open space and over 100 miles of trails. Every acre preserved is a promise to future generations that the beauty of our hillsides and canyons will endure. These open spaces are where families hike together, where wildlife thrives and where the natural beauty of Santa Clarita continues to flourish.

We are also investing in recreation for all ages. Central Park now dazzles with its new River of Lights display, illuminating the pathways near the exercise staircase and plaza. Old Orchard Park reopened this year with new play structures, a futsal court and even a turf sliding mound — creative touches that invite families to play and explore together. Soon, residents will enjoy the brand-new Haskell Canyon Bike Park, spanning 720 acres with more than 15 miles of cross-country, climbing and downhill trails.

As we celebrate our 38th year, I am reminded that Santa Clarita’s success is built on the strong sense of community we find here. Year after year, I have always recognized that one of Santa Clarita’s greatest strengths has always been its people — our neighbors who care deeply and look out for one another, volunteers who give selflessly of their time and talents, and generations of families who keep our community traditions alive. Our Fourth of July Parade, which predates cityhood by decades, continues to be a cherished event.  Even as we grow and evolve, we’ve never lost that small-town spirit.

Looking back, I am filled with gratitude for how far we’ve come. Looking ahead, I am confident in the future we are building — one that preserves our history, protects our open space and keeps Santa Clarita thriving for generations to come.

Happy birthday, Santa Clarita — here’s to 38 years of community and looking forward to what the future holds.
