Local school districts are set to have their organizational meetings this week to choose the new governing board officers for 2026.
The Saugus Union School District is set to have its organizational meeting on Tuesday to select a new president and clerk for the governing board. Current President Patti Garibay and board clerk Anna Griese will also be recognized during the meeting.
Presentations on the 2024-25 annual audit reports for the Saugus district and Community Facilities Districts will be given, according to the agenda item. A presentation on the 2025-26 first interim financial report will also be provided during the meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Saugus district office located at 24930 Avenue Stanford and will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Newhall School District
The Newhall School District will also have its organizational meeting and current members of the governing board will select a new president, clerk and clerk pro tem following an annual district reflection, according to the agenda.
The election of representatives to organizations for the coming year will also take place during the organizational meeting. Some of those positions include the California School Boards Association, the Special Education Local Plan Area board liaison, California School Boards Association Legislative Network, and others.
The organizational meeting will take place at the district’s office located on 25375 Orchard Village Road at 6 p.m. Tuesday and will then be followed by a regular board meeting at 7 p.m.
Castaic Union School District
The Castaic Union School District’s governing board will nominate a new president and clerk, according to the agenda. A nomination and election of presiding officer in absence of the president and clerk will also be established during the meeting.
Resuming to regular session, the governing board is recommended to approve student programming including an eight-week artist residency workshop with Robert Gilliam, Let’s Dance CA, to provide two classes per week for eight weeks in dance, fitness and musical theater classes.
The Castaic Union School District is located 28131 Livingston Avenue and the meeting wil begin at 6 p.m.
Santa Clarita Community College District
The Santa Clarita Community College District, which oversees College of the Canyons, will have its last organizational and business meeting of the year on Wednesday and is set to select a new president, vice president, clerk and secretary for the governing board. Terms of each officer are set to be one year, according to board policy 2210.
During the meeting, the COC governing board is also recommended to approve the 2026-27 budget parameters, according to the agenda. The budget parameters development is based on priorities outlined in current Accreditation Standards, the State Chancellor’s Vision 2030, the district’s Strategic Plan, and other recommendations and priorities, states an attachment available on the agenda.
The budget will support the district’s efforts to “pursue revenue augmentations through the maximization of our existing assets, grant and categorical funding, legislative advocacy efforts, influencing formula development at the state level and continued expansion of foundation efforts,” the attachment on the agenda read. The budget parameters also state the district will strive to attain a minimum of 16.7% fund balance.
COC’s governing board is also recommended to approve the interim superintendent/president’s employment agreement during Wednesday’s meeting. The governing board appointed Jasmine Ruys as the acting superintendent/president on Sept. 11 following the separation between COC and David Andrus.
The interim superintendent/president is expected to act as the college’s chief executive while the district conducts a nationwide search for a permanent replacement, the agenda item stated.
The interim superintendent/president is to be officially appointed during Wednesday’s closed session, which is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. Public comment on closed session items will occur then in room 301 at the University Center. Open session is at 5 p.m.
Sulphur Springs Union School District
The Sulphur Springs Union School District will be looking at selecting a new president, clerk, presiding officer and secretary for the governing board.
Other items the governing board will review include approval of a consultant agreement with Prismatic Magic LLC to provide a Black History Tribute Spectacular assembly for the students at Golden Oak Community School for the 2025-26 school year.
The Sulphur Springs District office is located at 27000 Weyerhaeuser Way and the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The William S. Hart Union High School District held its organizational meeting last week, choosing governing board member Joe Messina as the 2026 president.
