Officials with the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s office have identified the man who died at the crash scene on the northbound lanes on Interstate 5 near Magic Mountain Parkway on Thursday evening.

Estevan Whitfield, 37, of Sacramento, has been identified as the man who died at the crash scene after being run over by one of the vehicles involved.

Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, public information officer with the California Highway Patrol Newhall-area Office, said during a phone interview on Tuesday afternoon that the investigation is ongoing regarding which vehicle hit Whitfield.

Burgos-Lopez said officers received the call about the incident around 5:27 p.m., reporting there was a single-vehicle crash.

“As officers responded additional calls came in advising the involved vehicle, a white Dodge, was facing the wrong way blocking the No. 1 lane. A Toyota was able to come to a stop for the Dodge. An additional crash occurred when a Toyota was rear-ended by a Jeep,” said a press release by the CHP. “The drivers of the Toyota and Jeep exited their vehicles. A GMC was traveling northbound I-5, south of Magic Mountain Parkway approaching the crash scene and wasn’t able to stop before crashing into the stopped vehicles.”

The driver of the Toyota was run over by one of the vehicles, and first responders gave the victim life-saving measures. However, the driver of the Toyota succumbed to his injuries on the scene, according to the release.

It’s unclear whether the man was hit by the oncoming vehicle or one of the cars that stopped.
