As part of the Interstate 5 North County Enhancements Project, the southbound Hasley Canyon Road on-ramp is slated to be fully shut down for reconstruction from Feb. 18 through March, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
“Activities will include roadway excavation, concrete and asphalt paving, electrical work and metal beam guardrail installation,” the release read. “At the completion of construction, improvements are expected to enhance traffic flow and safety, reduce congestion and make commuting smoother.”
Commuters should expect a full, continuous closure from mid-February into the beginning of spring, but will have access to utilize the Hasley Canyon roundabout to The Old Road.
Speed within the construction zone will be 55 mph, and day and night work will occur behind K-rail concrete barriers.
“Access to emergency responders will be maintained. Construction is a dynamic process. It is subject to weather conditions and information is subject to change,” according to the release.
The six-year project began in 2021, and is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
The North County Enhancements Project began with stage one, which entailed construction of carpool lanes, medians, walls and bridges.
At the end of 2025, construction on various bridges and crossings took place, including: the Gavin Canyon Undercrossing Bridge, the Rye Canyon Road Bridge, the Santa Clara Overhead Crossing, the Weldon Canyon Road Overcrossing and the Magic Mountain Parkway Bridge.
Stage two, which includes ramp work and auxiliary lanes, is set for completion in December 2026.
Metro, in partnership with Caltrans District 7, is “improving the I-5 freeway from the (State Route) 14 interchange to just south of Parker Road in Castaic,” in response to an influx of at least 25,000 new residents moving to the Santa Clarita Valley by 2035, according to Metro’s website.
According to Metro’s website, the improvements in the I-5 North County Enhancements Project include:
- One new high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction.
- Truck lanes in both directions between Calgrove Boulevard and Highway 14.
- Auxiliary lanes between selected on- and off-ramps.
- Intelligent Transportation System technology upgrades.
- Soundwalls.
- The Weldon Canyon Bridge replacement.
