Local convenience store sells $2 million lottery ticket

A man won $2 million off a lottery scratcher purchased at a Newhall convenience store, according to the California Lottery.  

Hermilo Ruiz was the lucky winner and took home $2 million playing an Instant Prize Crossword Scratchers he purchased at Valencia Liquor & Wine located at 22925 Lyons Ave., according to a California Lottery news release.  

The retailer will also receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket, the release added.  

Ruiz isn’t the only person to hit the jackpot and kick off 2026 with a win. According to the news release, a man took home $1 million in Hawthorne playing the California Jackpot Scratchers and in northern California another man won $1 million off of a Power 10’s Scratchers game.  

According to the news release, $5 million in wins were given across the state from the Santa Clarita Valley to San Martin.
