Regarding Lois Eisenberg’s letter (March 11) about a handful of U.S. Olympic athletes “moonlighting” as political activists, I am conflicted. On one hand I strongly disagree with her, but on the other I feel comfortable in saying she is flat-out wrong.

This matter of Olympics athletes using their opportunity to compete globally as a soapbox to bash the president is smack dab in the category of “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” Not only that, it’s petty and ugly and taints the event we really came to watch. I can say the same for licensed gun owners taking loaded weapons to events that are known to turn violent. Sure, you have the “right” to do it, but is it “right” to do it? This is where we separate the wise from the immature, people looking to do good from people looking either for attention or to start trouble.

Athletes, like their Hollywood counterparts, are part of the entertainment industry. They perform partly to represent a COUNTRY and compete against each other, but mostly to entertain us, the audience, without whom they wouldn’t even exist as such. Well, they might exist, but they’d better have a day job to pay the bills. I highly doubt anyone intelligent needs to listen to the opinions of athletes, or anyone else for that matter, to formulate their own opinions or draw conclusions about someone or something, so what’s really going on here?

Oh, and “lest we forget,” an opinion is not necessarily the truth, it’s just one person’s perspective. And, as Rick Sanchez of “Rick and Morty” fame used to say, “Sorry, but your opinion means very little to me.”
