On March 16, I went to get my mail at the community (residential neighborhood) mail box. I had no mail, thought it weird because I always get something. I went back (the next day) and still none. I had company so did not have time to think about it. I wasn’t able to go on Wednesday but went this morning, Thursday, March 19, still nothing. Obviously, I was upset as I thought someone had jokingly stopped my mail, etc. I drove to the post office and was told by a person at the counter that the lock was broken on the master lock, so they could not open front of mailboxes to deliver mail. She did go back and get me a pile of my mail.

However, I realized that if they could not open the front of the boxes that the outgoing mail slot had not been opened either for the week. I have bill payments in there and am extremely upset about this situation. I asked when it would be fixed and she indicated she did not know.

When our postman reported the problem someone should have been sent out that day to repair the broken lock, which I was told was due to vandalism. Someone had tried to get at all of our mail. I was informed that repairs had to go through channels, which include a work order, chain of command, etc.

It is a federal offense to interfere with the delivery of mail. By Thursday morning no sign had been placed on the mailboxes or on the outgoing mail slot that no mail is being delivered or the outgoing picked up. They did not inform us we had to go to the post office to pick up the mail. I’m sure this slot/box of outgoing mail is packed. With thousands of community mailboxes I cannot imagine that our post office does not have a locksmith on staff.
