Regarding Lois Eisenberg’s letter (April 2), fact-checking President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, you’re barking up the wrong tree. You might even be in the wrong forest.
SOTU’s have been not much more than political theater for quite some time, going back to the first televised SOTU given by President Harry S. Truman in 1947. So, fact-checking such a performance is about as useless — and meaningless — as handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500. Why can’t we all just sit back with a bag of popcorn and enjoy the show? Why must we take things like this so seriously? It’s not like it’s a spelling bee or an episode of Jeopardy. Who cares about “facts”? I just want to be entertained, which is about all that’s left to life.
The American people were as divided on Trump’s SOTU address as they are about Trump himself — half of us love him and half of us hate him, and for about the same reasons. I suggest everyone decide which side they’re on and simply move on as there’s no point in either praising or complaining, because, like it or not, this is the way it is. Perhaps we should be grateful that things aren’t even worse. On the other hand, perhaps things should get worse so we could look back on these as “the good old days” and regret complaining about them.
