Santa Clarita Valley Boy Scouts Troop 316 is proud to announce that one of our scouts, 13 year old Eric Rodriguez, carried out his Eagle Scout Service Project on Saturday, November 19. Like all other Eagle service projects, this one required months of planning, preparation, and fundraising. In this case, the project involved assembling and delivering 100 emergency lockdown kits for each of the classrooms at Sylmar Charter High School. This school has had to go on lockdown several times in the past and presently has no emergency lockdown kits on campus. Twenty three scouts and parents outfitted each classroom with these kits, and now the school is prepared for future emergencies.
Each lockdown kits consist of a five-gallon bucket with a toilet seat lid. Inside the bucket, there is toilet paper, wet wipes, biohazard bags, vinyl gloves, a privacy screen, a bag of cat litter, and a roll of duct tape. The duct tape is also used in the case of a shelter-in-place emergency, where a toxic cloud of gas approaches the school. There is a landfill and a gas facility near the school, so that is another possible emergency. This project was made possible by many generous donations, including Sylmar Charter High School, Sylmar Neighborhood Council, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, EP Minerals Corporation, AMMEX Corporation, and Home Depot, as well as donations from friends and family members.
Troop 316 is a Christian Boy Scout troop. It is chartered by NorthPark Community Church, and takes its troop number from John 3:16 in the Bible. It is a very active troop, with monthly outings such as campouts, excursions, and service projects. Scouts meet at NorthPark every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Come and visit our Troop any Tuesday, or feel free to contact our Scoutmaster, Rob Clarke, [email protected], if you have any questions.
