The deadline to nominate an outstanding volunteer for the 2020 Santa Clarita Valley Man and Woman of the Year is fast approaching.

Unlike typical nonprofit events, where the recognition goes to that organization, these awards are given to specific volunteers for their efforts.

“Man and Woman of the Year was started to honor uber volunteers doing work for a variety of nonprofits,” said Ed Masterson, 2019 Man of the Year, adding, “and when it was first started years ago, Santa Clarita didn’t have any community events like this.”

The men and women nominated for this award are meant to have provided outstanding volunteer leadership to the Santa Clarita Valley.

Any group or organization that is a designated 501(c)(3), community service organization can nominate up to two volunteers — one man and/or one woman — for their service.

Volunteer service is defined by “long-time community commitment (not work-related) and includes, but is not limited to, the years of volunteer service, the type of service, and the impact of the service that was provided to multiple local organizations,” according to a news release issued by the committee.

The SCV Man & Woman of the Year Committee is made up entirely of past winners of the award, who then select this year’s winner from the submitted nominees, weighing them on their volunteer effort, years of service, impact and commitment to their nominating organization, and
the number of 501(c)(3) organizations they have served with.

Nominees will be announced at the annual paparazzi party on March 4, where nominees, their significant others and the executive directors of the nominating organizations will be invited, per the release. With the theme of “Celebrating Volunteer Leadership,” this year’s awards dinner is scheduled 6 p.m. on May 1 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.

All nominations for the 2020 Santa Clarita Valley Man and Woman of the Year will be acknowledged, and the deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31. For more information, visit scvmw.org, or to submit a nomination, visit bit.ly/2020ManWomanNoms
