SCV community celebrates the remainder of Lent with services

The Santa Clarita Valley community kicked off Lent last month with the observance of Ash Wednesday, and will continue the six-week celebration with Palm Sunday, March 28 and Good Friday, April 2 leading up to Easter. 

Lent is a time to reconnect with spirituality by partaking in fasting, sacrifice and prayer, said Bob Seigler, deacon at Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church. The 40-day period signifies the time Jesus Christ fasted in the desert. 

“It’s a different time compared to the rest of the year,” Seigler said. “It’s a time of self-sacrifice, and we ask those who participate that whatever they decide to do during this time will benefit others.” 

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends a few days before Easter. During this time, special days such as Palm Sunday and Good Friday are acknowledged, which tie into the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection. 

Churches across the SCV will be hosting special services during these days, and concluding Lent with Easter services and celebrations. Among them are: 

Crosspoint 

An in-person and online service will be held at Crosspoint to commemorate Palm Sunday, March 28 from 9 to 10:15 a.m.

Grace Baptist Church 

Services at Grace Baptist Church for “Passion Week” to commemorate Good Friday, Palm Sunday and Easter will be held on their respected days, with various service times for each. Reservations will be required.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help 

Services are planned for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday at the Newhall-based Catholic church.

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church 

Various masses will be held for Palm Sunday and Easter at Saint Kateri Church at 10 a.m. and noon, which can be viewed online or in person following COVID-19 health guidelines.

Santa Clarita Baptist Church 

A Good Friday service will be held at Santa Clarita Baptist Church 7 to 8 p.m. April 2 and a “resurrection service” April 2 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

St. Clare of Assisi Parish 

St. Clare’s popular “fish fry” dinner series concluded Friday, and the parish has services planned for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.
