The following letter was written before the end of the 2025 World Series.
Gary Horton, just when I thought your virtue signaling could stoop no lower, you outdid yourself with “Dodgers School America on Immigration” (commentary, Oct. 29).
To use the popularity of the Dodgers in the middle of a World Series run to tout them as a glowing model of the virtues of immigration and diversity is just weak and pathetic. Virtually every foreign-born Dodger you mention is a LEGAL immigrant. They are all wealthy. Do you think for a moment that the Dodger owners told their GM, “We need three Japanese players to satisfy our Asian community and our fans in Japan”?
No way.
They said, “Go out and get us the best hitters, fielders, and pitchers money can buy … period.”
If the Dodgers could win the World Series with 40 players of one nationality, they would do it in a heartbeat.
You say, “In baseball, diversity doesn’t just win games; it elevates the sport.”
You praise Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s respect for the game and Shohei Otani’s humility. They don’t have these qualities because they are Japanese. They are just good guys, like hundreds of other good guys in the big leagues.
Diversity, equity and inclusion have given us Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Karine Jean-Pierre. What have they elevated? DEI is dead, thank God.
You ask, “How can America remain a world-beater if we refuse to include the world?”
Your buddy, Joe Biden, had the same idea and welcomed 10-20 million unvetted illegal aliens into our country. How many of them are doctors, engineers, pharmacists, professional athletes, architects, or artificial intelligence innovators? How can you call it a win-win when we have millions of people who don’t obey our laws or respect our sovereignty? They are a never-ending drain on our nation’s resources.
You say, “America First sounds tough — but in reality, it’s America alone. And that’s a losing record.”
As you were writing that, President Donald Trump was flying around the globe stopping wars, signing trade deals, strengthening our ties with our allies and potential enemies, and helping return hostages. Because of his unworldly energy and astute statesmanship, the world is a much safer and more prosperous place.
The Dodgers may win the World Series, Gary, but don’t use them to support your outdated, woke ideas.
