So, Jack Teoli (letters, Aug. 29) is offended that the William S. Hart Union High School District has allowed the phrase “In God We Trust” to be displayed in the district boardroom. After his lengthy, roundabout history treatise on the origins of the hated phrase, he ends his rambling by saying, “This is again a classic example of Republicans in this town shoving ideology down our throats.”
Jack, you are a Hart district graduate and you live in Newhall. That means you believe in excellent schools and safe neighborhoods, both conservative ideals. If you have children, you don’t send them to the L.A. Unified School District and you don’t live in Van Nuys. Those are ineptly run by your liberal Democrat partners. Be thankful the Santa Clarita Valley has a rich tradition of conservative leadership.
“In God We Trust” is as American as mom and apple pie. It doesn’t say, “In the Christian God We Trust,” if that is what offends you so deeply. Every religion believes in a Higher Power. This phrase does not recognize any one religion. It merely states the five members of the governing board can look to a higher power when making decisions that affect our children’s lives. It is not some evil conservative conspiracy.
“In God We Trust” will serve our community just fine.
