News release
Ventura County painter Jem Atwater will take center stage at the May 18 monthly meeting of the Santa Clarita Artists Association at the Newhall Library. The evening demonstration is free and open to the public.
A classically trained oil painter, Atwater earned her bachelor’s in fine arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco before relocating to Ventura, where she has become a cornerstone of the regional arts community, said a news release from SCAA.
She teaches throughout Ventura County — at the Santa Paula Art Museum, Oxnard Performing Arts Center, Raminfard School of Arts, and her studio at Pacific and Main Creative Workspace.
“Her oils spanning plein air landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and pet portraiture are defined by a rigorous command of color theory and an acute
sensitivity to light and atmosphere,” the release said.
An avid surfer, she draws her inspiration from the California coast, and her work has been recognized by Plein Air Ventura County.
The May demonstration will offer attendees an opportunity for not merely a technical walkthrough, but an in-depth look at the thinking behind the work, the release said. Atwater will discuss the influences that shaped her artistic sensibility, the motivations that draw her repeatedly to the California coast, and the insights she has gathered through years of painting both outdoors and in the studio.
Guests are invited to arrive at 5:30 p.m. to mingle with fellow creatives before the demonstration begins. The meeting is scheduled 6-7:30 p.m. May 18 at the Newhall Library Community Room, 24500 Main St., Newhall.
