The antics of Abbott and Costello come to Buzz Classic Movies on Saturday night with a streaming presentation of “Africa Screams,” starring the famed comedy duo, Abbott and Costello.
The 1949 classic has earned a 67% critics’ score based on six reviews and a 38% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter” based on more than 500 ratings.
“When the bookish and mild-mannered Stanley Livington (Lou Costello) agrees to go along with a daft scheme thought up by his friend Buzz Johnson (Bud Abbott), the bumbling duo gets roped into an expedition to the jungles of Africa,” says the Rotten Tomatoes summary of the movie. “With Stanley posing as a seasoned hunter, they accompany explorer Diana Emerson (Hillary Brooke) on a quest for a hidden diamond mine. However, numerous natives and wild animals come between the treasure-seeking party and their destination.”
“It’s not among the boys’ best, but it’s still a sure bet for those who enjoy their antics,” critic Matt Brunson wrote for Film Frenzy. “The laughs are moderate but consistent, and it’s interesting to note that the supporting cast includes two members of The Three Stooges: Shemp Howard (who took over after Curly Howard died) and Joe Besser (who took over after Shemp died).”
“Africa Screams” streams at 8 p.m. Saturday on The Signal’s streaming channel, The Buzz, available at buzzscv.com as well as streaming platforms including Roku and Apple TV.
