Canyon High softball needed this one.

Coming off five straight losses, the Cowboys downed Oak Park, 8-4, at home Thursday behind Jessica Goodspeed’s arm and Melissa Spencer’s bat.

The Cowboys (2-5) scored two runs in the first, one in the second and five in the third while leaning on Goodspeed, who used her change-up and screwball to hold Oak Park to two runs over five innings of work.

Spencer finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Canyon to its second win under first-year coach Jeanette Sauceda Reynolds.

“(Today was) very important,” Sauceda Reynolds said, “because we’ve lost at home already, so it’s good to not only get a ‘W’ but get it at home. It definitely boosts their confidence.”

Especially on offense, where the Cowboys totaled 10 hits.

“We definitely have a lot of talent all around,” said Sauceda Reynolds, who added that the team has been adjusting to her coaching style, while she’s been adjusting to her players. “It’s (about) just coming together cohesively.”

In addition to Spencer and the left-handed Goodspeed, the Cowboys return 2016 All-Santa Clarita Valley first-teamer Kailee Powell at first base.

The Cowboys open Foothill League play against Saugus on March 30.
